Generative AI for Biological Sequence Design

Opportunities, Challenges, and Responsible Innovation

Tues 25th - Thurs 27th November 2025

Overview

The sandpit will convene leading experts in synthetic biology, bioengineering, AI, clinical sciences, ethics, and policy to critically assess the implications of generative AI for biological sequence design. We will focus on both the technical advances and emerging risks, including dual-use and bias concerns, associated with the use of large-scale generative models in the life sciences. The sandpit will facilitate cross-disciplinary dialogue, propose mitigation strategies, and lay the groundwork for policy recommendations.

Key Objectives

  • Consider recent breakthroughs in generative AI for designing protein, DNA, and RNA sequences.
  • Examine translational challenges in clinical and pharmaceutical applications.
  • Identify and analyse dual-use risks, particularly in synthetic biology and bioengineering.
  • Develop actionable guidelines for technical safeguards and governance frameworks.
  • Foster collaboration between the technical and policy communities for responsible innovation.
